Mary Sullivan Studio
8 Redwing St. Lindsay

Mary Sullivan’s studio is nameless unless you can call a garage a name. It transforms magically from a place she keeps her car into a tour location for her pottery and the guests she has from year to year. This year she is hosting Dorothy Cullen (mosaics) again as well as a new member of the tour, Lianne Miller (Jewellery).

Mary has been associated with the tour for almost 20 years, first as a webmaster, then social media and brochure designer and for the last eight years as an artist as well. She has passed the baton of her design pursuits to concentrate on her art this year.

When Mary started out on her journey in clay, she really wanted to sculpt. However, pottery is a seductive medium and she’s made mugs, bowls, platters and added her distinct quirky drawings to make them her own. However, she’s managed to still keep up with her love of sculpture in her fun garden art. In fact, this year she is one of six artists that have been chosen for the Fenelon Falls Downtown Sculpture Exhibition. Shown is one of her garden sculptures that will be available during the tour.

I love art of all kinds. My current passion is for ceramics and I create functional pieces with whimsical drawings as well as sculptural pieces for the home and garden. I used to paint, but decided to blend my painting skills with pottery and now my pieces have humorous animals and other characters that I hope make you smile as you use them.

I was introduced to linocut printing a few years ago while taking a class. I fell in love with the immediacy of it (pottery takes quite some time and has many steps) and I now turn the prints into greeting cards. These also are whimsical designs which have blank insides so you can add your own message. I may have to live until I’m 100 in order to use up all the art supplies I have yet to use!

I am being hosted at Mary Sullivan’s studio and this is my first year

Attached is my favourite piece – a custom designed bangle inspired by Art Nouveau. I used the client’s stones and set it in white gold. I am a lover all things shiny and am a crow at the heart of all things.

This is my first year on the tour and I am excited to be a part of the local arts and be connected to my community.

The original inspiration for my work comes from my childhood fascination with the stained glass windows in my church. I loved the way the coloured glass pieces came together to make a whole. As an adult I developed a love of repurposing unwanted items and so mosaicing became my creative expression of these two loves brought together. The image shown is an example of this, many small colourful bits of glass coming together as a whole while being centered by a glass disk that was found in my neighbour’s garden under layers of dirt. I call it ‘Aztec Sun’.

Participating in the VCST gives me an opportunity to share my love of mosaics as expressed in my colourful style.
